The intersection of art and music is not an unfamiliar one. But if Basquiat and Rothko isn’t to your taste, and you grew up with the likes of Stan Lee and Alan Moore, perhaps Ed Pisko’s ingenious Hip Hop Family Tree is more suited to your needs. His comics are exactly what they suggest—Pisko takes hip hop’s days of yore, featuring all the key players like Run DMC and Grandmaster Melle Mel, and tells the history in an entertaining, aesthetically mind-blowing way. Pisko’s life may have been “indoctrinated with Warhol-type imagery,” but he sure as hell managed to get cartooning down pretty damn well.
If you’re interested in learning about how it all started, or if you’re simply looking to brush up on your knowledge, read some of the Hip Hop Family Tree instalments over at Boing Boing, or purchase the graphic novels (currently, there are two volumes) here.
