From a list that included FKA twigs, Chance The Rapper, and Kelela, British singer Sam Smith has been crowned BBC’s “Sound of 2014” by a panel of 170 UK-based critics, broadcasters and bloggers. Smith is best known for his appearance on Disclosure’s “Latch” and also recently announced his debut album In The Lonely Hour. Ella Eyre, Sampha, Banks, and George Ezra made up the rest of this year’s top five.
The “Sound of 2014” has been a fairly solid indicator of success over the past few years, with HAIM and AlunaGeorge the top two in 2013, and Frank Ocean landing number two spot in 2012.
