Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon and The National‘s Aaron Dessner formally announced the first Eaux Claires Music & Arts Festival last December, sharing that the new festival would take place July 17-18 in Vernon’s hometown of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The festival was conceived as a way of bringing people to Eau Claire, as well as a way for Vernon to bring his favorite musicians together. As he said in the festival announcement:

Having this festival right in my backyard gives me and the guest artists a chance to share familiar work and new creations in a setting close to my heart and different than any other stage in the world. To create this event within view of the Chippewa River—the very river that defines this place—makes it all the more meaningful.

The lo-fi, backwoods vibe of the event has continued with the lineup announcement—starting yesterday, people who preordered festival tickets received screenprinted letters by mail, each with the name of a different musician playing the festival.
