When we were first introduced to Charles Hamilton nearly a decade ago, the opinions on him were split down the middle. Some forward thinking music lovers really understood where he was coming from, while many others just didn’t seem to “get it.” With time, the latter opinion seemed to the more agreed upon outlook on Hamilton’s budding career. And soon he went from being labeled “the next big thing” to completely vanishing from the public in almost the blink of an eye.

In a recent interview with Billboard, Hamilton admitted that his absence from music had to do with his long battle with mental illness. “I wanted to commit career suicide, physical suicide, spiritual suicide—I didn’t care anymore,” said Hamilton. He revealed that he cut ties with friends and family, basically shut out the outside world and would make music as a way to deal with his bipolar disorder.

Fortunately, things are starting to look up for Charles Hamilton once again. He admits that he is feeling much better, and is ready to get back into music. He recently inked a new record deal with Republic Records, starting performing again and had his song selected to be in the finale of Fox’s new hit show Empire. Maybe he was too ahead of his time when he first stepped onto the music scene, but now seems like the perfect timing for his comeback.
