“Close Your Eyes and Count to Fuck” might be the most vicious track off Run the Jewels 2. With Zack De La Rocha unleashing a explosive guest verse and Jamie and Mike articulating the things that get them heated (police brutality, first and foremost), the song is a riot-inducing condemnation of a broken justice system.
The video brings those issues down to street-level: we pick up with Shea Whigham (Eli in Boardwalk Empire) and Keith Stanfield (Jimmie Lee Jackson in Selma) as a white cop and black youth locked in a physical fight that seems to have no beginning and no end. Director AG Rojas said “our goal was to highlight the futility of the violence, not celebrate it.” RTJ gave the following statements:
This is a vision of a seemingly never ending struggle whose participants are pitted against each other by forces originating outside of themselves.
This video represents the futile and exhausting existence of a purgatory-like law enforcement system. There is no neat solution at the end because there is no neat solution in the real world. However, there is an opportunity to dialogue and change the way communities are policed in this country.
