Rumors have been floating around the internet for the past week regarding a new album from David Bowie due for release next year, and it would appear those rumors were in fact true. Clearing up all the confusion, David Bowie’s official website has been updated to properly announce the forthcoming album, which is due for release on January 8 2016, which is also David’s birthday. Titled Blackstar, the first single from the album will be out on November 20.
Times of London reported that the album will include seven songs and was recorded in New York with local jazz musicians, with it apparently sounding pretty insane, to say the least. The title track is supposedly ten minutes long, and that the rest of the album will follow in a similar vein, saying it’s “an album of long, jazzy jams mixed with the king of driving beat pioneered by Seventies German bands Can and Kraftwerk.”
The supposed Bowie insider who got all of this information after listening to the finished album, said that the title track contains “Gregorian chants, a soul section, various electronic bleeps and Bowie’s distinctive vocals.” They added that the album overall sounds “completely bonkers.” In other words, it sounds exactly like the type of record Bowie should be making. Whether this other information is true remains to be seen, but we won’t have to wait long to find out with the single releasing mid next month.
