In sad news, it has been reported that Scott Weiland, former frontman of Stone Temple Pilots and supergroup Velvet Revolver, passed away at the age of 48 on Thursday night. News began to roll in around midnight after Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro tweeted (then quickly deleted): “Just learned our friend Scott Weiland has died. So gutted, I am thinking of his family tonight.”
According to the statement written on Weiland’s official Instagram page, the musician “passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, with his band The Wildabouts.” TMZ reports that Weiland was found on the tour bus around 9pm. His current band was expected to perform that evening at the Medina Ballroom, but the show was cancelled following the terrible news.
As of right now, the cause of Weiland’s death remains unclear. However, judging by the countless messages on social media from fans, it is safe to say that he will be sorely missed.
UPDATE, 12/18/15: The Office of the Hennepin County Medical Examiner has shared a press release regarding the late Scott Weiland’s cause of death. Ruled an accidental passing, the artist unintentionally consumed a “toxic mixing” of MDA, cocaine, ethanol.
