Adele’s album 25 is at the top of the Billboard 200 for its ninth week. However, one surprising absence from the chart this week is Kanye West’s long-awaited and somewhat controversial album The Life of Pablo, which saw release on February 14 before it was pulled from sale. The only way to officially hear the album right now is via Tidal, and it looks as if that’s the reason it hasn’t charted.
According to Billboard‘s vice president of charts and data development Silvio Pietroluongo, “Billboard has been informed that Tidal is not currently reporting streams for tracks on Kanye’s album to Nielsen Music. Therefore streams from Tidal for this title will not contribute to Billboard’s chart rankings at this time.” Rihanna also experienced a bizarre debut on the Billboard 200 when she released her latest album, ANTI, on Tidal.
Rihanna’s album didn’t sell a lot of copies during its first week because it released on January 27 thanks to a slip-up on Tidal’s part, and the sales week ended on January 28. Unlike Rihanna, however, Kanye’s streaming stats are simply not being shared with Nielsen Music, which means until they are, or the album goes up for sale or streaming via another service, the album will never chart. If this ends up being the case, it means it’ll be his first album to not chart the top 5.
