It’s very clear that Prince had a big impact on D’Angelo, with that imprint showing up in a number of D’Angelo’s songs. As such, his touching cover of “Sometimes It Snows In April” on The Tonight Show is perhaps the most powerful tribute we’ve seen since Prince’s passing. Playing on piano with no more than two backup singers, D’Angelo’s striking performance would have done Prince proud. It gets hard to watch as it approaches the end, with D’Angelo singing, “I often dream of heaven now I know that Prince is there,” struggling to compose himself for the next line.

Watch the moving performance above, but make sure you have a few tissues first.
