UK-based singer Kyla found herself in shock when she was contacted by Drake’s team, initially believing it to be an elaborate April Fools joke. Kyla’s 2008 collaboration with Crazy Cousinz, “Do You Mind,” was recently sampled on Drake’s latest single, “One Dance.” Speaking with Trevor Nelson on BBC Radio 1Xtra last weekend, Kyla explained, “I got a call a while back, and I was getting loads of emails. To be honest, I was really bad and kept putting them aside like ‘I’ll call later’.”
She explained further, “You know how it is, sometimes we’ve had things come in and they fall through at the last minute. When we phoned, the company said ‘A huge international star wants to sample your tune and they wanna have a meeting with you’. I was like ‘Yeah ok, who?’ and when they said Drake I was like ‘Yeah right!’ We signed papers and I still didn’t believe it. I had a feeling someone was gonna say to me ‘April Fools’.”
Initially the contract she signed was only for that of a sample, but after a few phone calls Drake wanted to have her listed as a feature on the song instead. “One Dance” is expected to feature on Drake’s upcoming album, Views From The 6, which recently got a release date of April 29.
