Mayor Steve Adler first took office in 2015, but he’s lived in Austin for decades. Over that time he’s seen SXSW explode in size and popularity, and the city has followed suit. “Austin is America’s fastest growing metropolitan area,” he told us, “and it has been for the last four years.”
All that growth could make the mayor’s job a stressful one—but if that’s the case, it didn’t show when we went to City Hall. Mayor Adler is a supremely calm individual, and he took some time during Austin’s busiest week to break down SXSW’s effect on the city, and his hopes for its future.
Among them: better public transportation, a sustainable, mixed income housing economy, and continued support for artists and musicians. A forward-thinking city needs forward-thinking leaders, and Austin has just that.
