As fellow artists and fans of Prince alike pay tribute the legendary artist, Australian music site The Music instead dug deep into the archives for the story of the Prince episode of The Simpsons that never was. According to The Simpsons show runner Al Jean, the episode was intended for season four or five, but the script was rejected Prince.

The episode was to serve as the sequel to Simpsons episode “Stark Raving Dad,” in which Homer accidentally ends up in an insane asylum and shares a room with a man named Leon Kompowsky who thinks he’s Michael Jackson. MJ even provided his voice for said episode. In the Prince episode, Kompowsky was to make a return to the series, now believing himself to be Prince, as well as Bobby Goldsboro, Leo Sayer, and Roberta Flack.

Ultimately, Prince said no to the episode. While it remains unclear as to why he said no, Jean suspects that it was due to the fact that Prince didn’t “want to play second fiddle to MJ,” and also perhaps due a joke about The Purple One’s films. Thankfully, after reviewing the script, the show runner decided to share some of it, featuring rewrites from Conan O’Brien.
