Sitting down with Complex for a behind-the-scenes interview during his June/July 2016 cover shoot, Chance The Rapper described the final hours of helping Kanye West finish The Life of Pablo and explained how many things changed last-minute.
Chance reveals that the project was still called SWISH when he came on board, but “after listening to ‘Waves’ like 50 times, the next day the album was WAVES.” As Kanye made final adjustments, however, the song was momentarily shelved.
“In the final hours, I was actually out in New York,” he explains. “The album was supposed to come out the next day at the fashion show. We spent all night finishing so many records: ‘Famous’ and ‘Father Stretch’ and a lot of those records got finished in the last hours. ‘Waves’ got put on the back burner.”
“We did the fashion show, and the next day were rehearsals for Saturday Night Live,” he continues. “He came to me in rehearsals and was like, ‘you really want ‘Waves’ to be on the album?’ And I was like, ‘yep!’ And he was like, ‘well, let’s go to the studio, we’ve got to finish it.’
I said, ‘we’ve gotta finish it tonight’? Then he said, ‘we’ve got to finish it toNOW.’ That’s one of my favorite Kanye quotes of all time.
Chance also took the time to give his thoughts on Frank Ocean, explaining just how isolated he’s been working on finishing his “masterpiece.”
“No one really is able to find Frank when Frank goes away,” he says. “Like, literally no one, not just publications. But I know he’s away, making a masterpiece. I think Frank is very, very focused on his catalog. I think anything that you hear him on that’s a feature from anyone was recorded a long time ago. That’s something you would have to confirm with him, but I don’t think Frank is working on anyone’s stuff except for his own.”
