After last weekend’s airing of the BET Awards, many viewers began to share footage of actor Jesse Williams’ powerful speech on race and cultural appropriation. While quotes from Williams’ speech quickly became a hot topic, various celebrities took to Twitter to express their opinions about everything he had said. However, when Justin Timberlake decided to tweet that he was inspired by the speech, he was quickly met with backlash and accused of being exactly like the cultural appropriators that Williams spoke of.

During a recent episode of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Vic Mensa stopped by to discuss the BET Awards, Williams’ speech, and his own thoughts on Timberlake’s tweets about race where he stated that “we are the same.”

Mensa explained that the reason so many people had an issue with Timberlake’s tweets is because although his entire music career tends to borrow from black culture and he seems to appreciate black culture, he remains quiet on crucial issues within the same culture.

He stated that he scrolled through Timberlake’s Twitter account in search of any mention of #BlackLivesMatter topics, or any other recent injustices and social issues that have occurred within the black culture, only to find nothing. He went on to say, “We’re not feeling him being down when it’s beneficial to him, and turning a blind eye when it could be dangerous.”
