Just before she announced her upcoming MLH Caravan: A Diaspora Calling! concert series, Lauryn Hill made her debut on PBS’ Austin City Limits earlier this week. Bringing some of her most beloved classics to the stage, Hill did not disappoint with lively performances of “Ready or Not,” “Doo Wop (That Thing),” and more.
A clear highlight of her performance, though, was one that was unexpected: Lauryn Hill treated audience members to a rare performance of “Mystery of Iniquity,” which earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rap Solo Performance in 2003. The song is also perhaps best known for being the inspiration for Kanye West’s “All Falls Down.” Kanye apparently never managed to clear the sample, and so Syleena Johnson ended up singing the hook on “All Falls Down.”
