The Weeknd’s schedule may be jam packed these days, but that hasn’t stopped him from taking time to give back. According to The Toronto Star, the singer recently donated $50,000 to the University of Toronto to help establish an Ethiopic Studies program.

The donation came after the Bikila Awards organization, a group which “foster academic, professional and business excellence and promote volunteerism among persons of Ethiopian origin,” reached out to Tesfaye asking him to contribute. Tesfaye, who is an Ethiopian-Canadian himself, immediately answered their request.

In 2014, before The Weeknd was the superstar he’s grown to today, Bikila Award honored the singer with its Professional Excellence Award. “Back then he was doing a lot of stuff, but was still a boy from Scarborough just rising to fame,” board member Tam Gebeyehu said. “His donation helps us preserve our culture and share it with everyone else.”

Thanks to Tesfaye’s donation, the program has now raised over $170,000.
