Each year, BBC consults 170 music tastemakers to predict the industry's next breakthrough artist. The panel consulted by BBC is made up of journalists, curators, DJs, and broadcasters, all of whom are asked to select three musical acts they predict will have a lasting influence on the music industry. The honor aims to showcase "the most exciting rising stars” from Britain and beyond. In order to qualify for consideration, the artist “must not already be widely known by the UK general public" and cannot have been the main artist on a UK top 20 track or album before October 30.

Today, the longlist of 2017's fifteen nominees has been announced. The list is dominated by British hip hop acts such as Dave and AJ Tracey, showing that grime is alive and thriving. American underground favorites such as the charismatic Anderson .Paak and Maggie Rogers, who impressed Pharrell with her unique sound, also appear on the list. Soul singer Jorja Smith, who recently released a stellar new EP, claimed a spot on the list as well.

Previous winners of the honor include Adele, 50 Cent, and Sam Smith.

The winner will be announced on January 6. Read the full list of nominees below.
