The Weeknd's new album, Starboy, will finally arrive this weekend. As usual, the singer has preferred to leave some mystery surrounding the release, but he did agree to sit down for an in-depth interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1. The full interview won't air until Thursday night at midnight along with the album, but Apple Music did share four clips from the conversation—including The Weeknd's thoughts on working with Kendrick Lamar, sobriety, creating "Starboy" with Daft Punk, performance anxiety, and cutting his signature hair.
“He’s a genius,” he said, explaining his collaborative relationship with Lamar. “It wasn't just a random Kendrick Lamar verse. It was something special because, again, I don’t like to say this all the time—but we’ve known each other for a while and it’s crazy how we started connecting on this record.”
After admitting to keeping his famous locks after finally cutting his hair, he explained the need for change. "I was thinking about it for a bit. The vision wasn't there anymore," he said. "It was the greatest feeling of all time, it was so good. I an sleep better, I felt lighter. When I perform, I perform better. I feel better. It's cool. You don't even realize how much of a pain in the ass it is until you cut it. But the best part about all of it is that I get to wear hats again. Just wear a cap, walk in to a restaurant, and no one knows it's you."
Watch clips from the conversation above and below, and look out for the full interview along with the album on Thursday night.
