Every year, time seems to move a little bit faster. It could be the internet, or living in New York City–I’m not sure. Maybe it’s just part of getting older. Maybe we’re just getting slower. When we were kids, a year was a big chunk of our lives. We still counted birthdays by the half-year, like we couldn’t wait any longer for this one to be over and for the one next to arrive. It’s like we were always a step ahead, sitting around with extra time while the rest of the world caught up.
These days, there’s no such thing as extra time. Everything flies by in a blur, like time-lapse photography of busy streets at night. We find ourselves wishing for an extra minute in the hour, and extra hour in the day, and extra day in the year. We find ourselves struggling to keep up.
The end of the year is the perfect time to slow down and take a minute. If you don’t have a minute, steal a minute. If you’ve been meaning to write someone a letter, check out an album that you haven’t had a chance to sit down with, or cross off something that’s been sitting at the top of your to-do list for way too long, do it now. You don’t want to start 2012 off with that kind of stuff hanging over your head, because 2012 is going to move faster than any year you’ve ever experienced before.
For this mix, we took a minute to look back and revisit some of the songs that may have slipped under the radar. In the ongoing sprint to keep up, there are bound to be gaps. Fill in the blank.
