John Denver – “Please Daddy (Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas)”

On John Denver’s 1973 album Farewell Andromeda, he gives prominent placement to the song “Please Daddy (Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas).” In somewhat of a departure from his normally upbeat country music, Denver sings from the perspective of an eight-year-old boy, who asks, “Please Daddy, don’t get drunk this Christmas. I don’t wanna see my Mama cry.” As the child describes it, his father comes home drunk and falls down under the family’s Christmas tree. The mother sends the child upstairs as the father laughs this off and she starts crying. It may read like a stock scene from a Lifetime Movie, but the end result is a Christmas song that’s off-putting and doesn’t get much play in December.
