Rev Run & the Christmas All Stars featuring Mase, Puff Daddy, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Salt-n-Pepa, Onyx & Keith Murray – “Santa Baby”
Rap songs about Christmas routinely become an excuse for a big old posse cut, and this one was the most bonkers ever. Another track from A Very Special Christmas 3, which should illustrate what a singularity event pop rap was in the late ‘90s, “Santa Baby” gathered Keith Murray, Mase, Onyx, Puff Daddy, Run, Salt-N-Pepa and Snoop Doggy Dogg, which basically reads as whoever’s managers answered the phone. Consider that this was the Christmas after the Notorious B.I.G. was killed and nevertheless here we have Puffy and Snoop Dogg on a track together. It’s perhaps surprising, then, that the end result is actually pretty good. Over a three-note beat, the seven or so rappers here relay their generally disillusioned past experiences with Christmas, backed by a chorus of “Santa Baby, just slip a Benzo under the tree for me, a ‘98 convertible, light blue. I’m looking for a fly guy, like you, so hurry down the chimney tonight.” Pretty much exactly the Christmas song the bling-era deserved.
