The Pogues – “Fairytale Of New York”
“Fairytale Of New York,” off the Irish band the Pogues’ third album, tells the story of an Irish immigrant who is tossed in the drunk tank in New York City on Christmas Eve and spends the night dreaming of a girl. It’s nostalgic, but bitterly so. The story is depicted through a duet between the Pogues’ lead singer Shane MacGowan and the band’s producer’s wife Kirsty MacColl. The two trade affectionate lines such as: “You´re a bum you’re a punk.” “You’re an old slut on junk lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed.” “You scumbag; you maggot. You cheap lousy faggot. Happy Christmas your ass; I pray God it’s our last.” It may not be heartwarming but it’s refreshingly, bracingly honest.
