The indie hype circle jerk is just as corrupt as in mainstream music.
To many fans, one of the appealing things about indie music is the feeling that it's somehow more pure and rooted in artistic merit than much of the big budget mainstream acts being pushed by big companies with deep pockets. The fact is that plenty of times that's not the case. A few PR companies, labels, and media outlets have most of the influence and power in indie music, and time after time when you see a buzz band break in the indie world, it's the line-up of usual suspects that is responsible. Behind the scenes exists there are money driven motives, marketing schemes, mutually beneficial relationships between labels and media outlets, conflicts of interest, and much of the same ugliness that caused many indie fans to become disillusioned with the mainstream in the first place.
