We get satisfaction out of liking things that most people don't know about.

It's always great to be the person in the know. Whether you're the person who is always asked to make mixes or control the iPod at a party, sometimes it pays to keep up with the constant stream of music and be able to find that great new track before anyone's ever heard of it. However, if you've been playing that role for a while you are well aware that it runs deeper than just sharing the music. It becomes a compulsion to be ahead of the curve, and when that annoying kid you don't really like starts running their mouth about a band you've been listening to for years you inevitably have to make it clear that you found that band first. You know it makes you sound like a pretentious douchey hipster showoff but you can't help it; you got there first and everyone needs to know it.
