Year Established: 1989 Genre Focus: Indie Rock Website: www.matadorrecords.com
In 1989 a guy named Chris Lombardi started a record label in his New York City apartment. The label? Matador Records. The outfit now has two operating locations: its original spot in NY (no longer in Lombardi's apartment) and a second in London. After a few rather short-lived partnership agreements with each Atlantic and Capitol Records, Matador ultimately linked up with Beggars Group in 2002. Predominantly focused on indie rock artists and bands, Matador has represented a long list of the genres biggest names. Previous clients include Neko Case, Guided by Voices, Lou Reed, Liz Phair, and Spoon. The label lists Cat Power, Fucked Up, Interpol, Pavement, Sonic Youth, and Yo La Tengo as current acts.
