Founded in Nebraska by Mike Mogis and Justin Oberst, the label first gained notoriety with bands like Bright Eyes, led by Justin's brother and now solo artist Conor Oberst. Named after Saddle Creek Road, a path that cuts through their native city of Omaha, the label quickly became known for an "Omaha Sound" that was remniscent of a midwest, country twang. Although bands like Bright Eyes and Monsters of Folk were in line with this characteristic, Saddle Creek's more recent signings like The Faint and Cursive steer away from the twang and more into the electronic current. Whether they lean towards twang, rock, or electronic, though, the label shows no signs of slowing down, as artists like Maria Taylor, The Thermals, and PUJOL exhibit their on-point curation.
