The performances in the years leading up to Elvis' death often descended into farce, with the multiple drug-addicted, now overweight "King" mumbling unintelligibly, forgetting his words, or becoming so crippled by nerves that he could hardly talk. Not all shows were failures, and regardless of their quality, Elvis still had an incredible power over his audience, remaining, as we can see from the grainy footage above, a true showman to the last.
