Streaming now counts towards RIAA Platinum and Gold certifications
Starting in May 2013, the RIAA now use calculations from a number of services, including audio streams from MOG, Muve Music, Rdio, Rhapsody, Slacker, Spotify, Xbox Music, and video streams from MTV.com, VEVO, Yahoo! Music and YouTube. One hundred streams of a song will be equal to one sale. The RIAA have only changed their certification formula five times in their history, so the inclusion of streaming shows that industry insiders are certain that it will remain a large part of the equation in the future.
