Put simply, working with artists is difficult. All the great ones are crazy, and all the decent ones are... not sane, they are also crazy. As a manager, A&R, booking agent, you are responsible for doing what is best for the artist, and undoubtedly your vision will sometimes stray from the artist’s. In that case, you must pick your battles, sacrificing in the short term to help in the long run. Mixing business with art is never easy.
At the end of the day, everyone who works in the industry is reliant on the artists. If Justin Bieber wants to put out an introspective R&B album, Scooter Braun is most likely going to sit back and let him do just that, with the hope that he’ll go back to selling out arenas shortly thereafter.
