Beyoncé ft. Kendrick Lamar - "Freedom"
Release date: April 23, 2016
In 2015, Kendrick Lamar made a bold statement with To Pimp A Butterfly. The brutally honest body of work broke new ground with sounds and lyrics that simultaneously fought to smash stereotypes and help listeners embrace their blackness by being comfortable and unapologetic in their own skin. On last year’s Lemonade, Beyoncé took the torch down the same path of subject matter—this time specifically focusing on speaking to and for black women.
The album’s tenth track, “Freedom,” finds Beyoncé and Kendrick fusing their messages together for an empowering moment. Though Kendrick—and the black men he’s speaking for—is continuously being beaten down by life’s trials and tribulations, he continues to run towards the freedom he seeks. The words are strong enough, but the passion in his voice creates a feeling of raw liberation.
