Gold Panda has, since his debut Lucky Shiner, occupied a unique place between electronic music and Dilla-esque hip-hop. In the few glimpses at his newer production since that breakout project his work has come across as far more reserved and techno-influenced. “Thailand Chord Droner” certainly follows that trend, content to go through the track with minimal change or transition and looking for beauty instead in delicate synth loops and dramatic shifting drum patterns. This is nowhere near as dynamic as “Quitters Raga” or “You,” but it’s interesting to watch an artist change. It doesn’t get me quite as excited for a new GP album, though.
