Much music released these days nods to timeless precedents without really understanding what it is that makes a song timeless. While it would be a just a tiny bit of overstatement to call sisterly duo Lily and Madeleine’s “Back to the River” timeless, it seems like the product of tremendous study, a gorgeous, stark piano ballad that cares little for wobble bass, auto-tone, or anything that reeks of fleeting modernity.

From the opening line, “If only my feet could fall as fast as the heart does,” the sisters show impressive songwriting ability that fits as well alongside current indie favorites as it would on crackling vinyl.
