Cocovan has been making music since her late teens, but this is the first we’ve heard of the French synth-pop singer-songwriter. It’s a good look. “Roosevelt Hotel” is an arresting piece of sugary pop but with enough personality to adjust expectations and feel completely individual; it’s the fresh mint flavor on a shelf full of bubblegum. It’s especially impressive, given that Cocovan wrote and produced the whole thing on her own, not in her native French and without any label backing. But what’s most striking is the fact that it stands on its own merits, a pop song worth its slot on a playlist with some of the best up-and-coming songstresses bursting from the woodwork this year.
