Here’s some brand new music from Beck, a light meandering space-rock trance called “Defriended.” It is apparently not a part of his upcoming acoustic album, nor will it appear on the other album Beck is apparently cooking up. This is too bad. “Defriended” introduces a sound new to Beck’s faithful, borrowing from early Animal Collective and heavy on gorgeous electric ornamentation. Chimes, sirens, and sounds run in reverse decorate the tinseled Christmas tree that is “Defriended.”

I guess throwing out singles whenever you want is one of the advantages of releasing music independently—these two albums will be Beck’s first foray into that lonesome field after years with Universal. It doesn’t seem to have affected his skills. Stream “Defriended” below.
