One of the underrated elements of Madlib‘s production is his ability to dig blazing, psychedelic funk from the deepest corners of forgotten records. The man most readily associated with hazy, jazzy loops is often at his best when slicing blistering drum-breaks, angular Eastern string instruments, and vocal freak outs into hypnotic backdrops primed for energized performances. “City,” the latest in Adult Swim’s typically excellent singles series, features just such a beat. An impassioned Freddie Gibbs delivers on the demands of this sort of gutbucket psych-jam, effortless as ever, sharp and full of fire. Another winning track from the duo.

City serves as a tantalizing preview of the duo’s upcoming LP, Piñata, which will feature appearances from Raekwon, Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, Domo Genesis, Joey Bada$$, Ab-Soul, BJ the Chicago Kid, Meech of Flatbush Zombies, Casey Veggies, Mac Miller, Polyester the Saint, and G-Wiz–as if Madlib and Gibbs together wasn’t enough.
