The last song we heard from Meg Myers was “The Morning After,” and it was Meg at her most restrained. It was pretty, but one of Meg’s most affecting qualities is her ability to explode, and with “Make a Shadow,” we’re reminded of how awesome it is when Meg explodes.

The song employs the quiet-loud format that the best bands of the ’90s mastered, a building tension and a wave of relief brought on by the sweeping chorus. It’s something not many of today’s acts can pull off without sounding dated, and it’s something that makes Meg Myers stand out from so many that rely on trendy production instead of those powerful “oh shit” moments.

Meg’s Make a Shadow¬†EP comes out tomorrow, February 11.
