These days, you don’t have to be a great freestyler to be a great rapper, but it’s still nice to watch an MC do their thing in an unscripted setting every now and then. Last night, such an event took place during Childish Gambino’s performance at The Riviera in Chicago. As the show was winding down, Gambino took the opportunity to flex on the mic for a minute, spitting alongside his guest Steve G and the hometown hero, Chance the Rapper.
It wasn’t a conventional freestyle by any means, as both Chance and Gambino eventually let the performance dissolve into a rap-singing hybrid, but the energy was there, and they each got in a few solid bars of their own.
