Set to appear on her upcoming, untitled album, Kimbra’s latest track “90s Music” may be the strangest, most surprising song you hear all day. The track starts out with a hard, industrial screech which reappears at various points in conjunction with glowing synths, rollicking, percussive textures, and Kimbra’s own heavily-distorted vocals.
It’s hard to know what to make of the song, if it’s supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek jab against pop music and nostalgia, or why it cuts out so abruptly. But as challenging as it is to understand, the song is also completely listenable and enjoyable. More than anything, it plays as a thrilling and direct confrontation between a pop artist and the conventions of her genre. See what you think of it below.
