Sakima is a 23-year-old musician originally from Newcastle, and now based in London. His latest single is “Energy,” a moody pop song with brilliant production based around handclaps and pounding bass, and today we’re premiering a new version of the song, reworked by Sakima himself. This is no halfhearted remix with nothing more than a few tweaked drums, no, this is a totally new “backwards” version, with a different, weightless and at times haunting feel.
I love the idea of artists re-interpreting their own work as it adds a different insight into the thoughts and feelings of what they were originally trying to put across. For me the challenge of remixing/reworking my own material was that I am so connected with the original song. So to dig into the track and pull it apart, reconstructing it with vocal chops and turning the arrangement upside down was a really exciting experiment.
Listen to both the remix and the original track below. “Energy” is out September 14 via Jakwob’s label Boom Ting Recordings, pre-order here.
