Xul Zolar are a three piece from Cologne in Germany, not that you’d know that from their vocals, which sound as English as Friendly Fires, Troumaca, or similar bands dabbling in this tropical-feeling blend of jangly indie-rock and electronic touches. Like much of the best music, there’s an emotional depth to “Ilajaly” that becomes more apparent with repeat listens. The watery synths, spiky guitars, and lush production suggest summer days and long warm nights, but the lyrics point to nostalgia, loss, and moving on from one’s mistakes.
“Ilajay” comes from Xul Zolar’s debut EP, scheduled for release sometime early in 2015. Check it out below.
