All real hip-hop heds know that the roots of the genre lie in the Caribbean; that is, in dancehall and reggae. From the moment DJ Kool Herc first ran it back at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, Jamaican music and hip-hop have been intrinsically intertwined. Now, a new mixtape¬†courtesy of DJs Gravy and Corey Chase¬†is paying tribute to this long history of cross-pollination, showcasing the reggae roots of some of hip-hop’s most classic tracks (“Dipset Anthem,” anyone?).
