Some hip-hop is hard to think of as art. Maybe that’s because so many rappers refer to it as a game. Maybe it’s because art demands human creativity and most hit singles demand a formula. We usually end up with ignorant shit that sells and artsy underground shit that doesn’t sell. Then you’ve got OutKast. Wildly creative and inventive, yet somehow these guys have dominated airwaves, won over the hearts of pretty much everyone (who doesn’t like Outkast?), and nabbed some Grammies along the way.
You might not realize it, because even Outkast’s old albums still sound fresh if not futuristic, but these guys have done six albums together. Southernplayalisticcadillacmuzik dropped 16 years ago! From “Player’s Ball” to “Elevators” to “Rosa Parks” to “Bombs Over Baghdad” to “Hey Ya!”. It’s kind of mind blowing.
I’m rambling. The point of this post is to let you know that Outkast just revamped Outkast.com and you can sign up over there for a chance to win their entire catalogue on vinyl and CD. Head over there now and sign up. If P&P shows some love to Outkast, they may return the favor… Stay tuned.
