Annie Hall, better known as St. Vincent, is kind of a quirky character – not outlandish and weird or funny like a clown – just kind of quirky. When singers are quirky, it often translates into corny or cute, two things that you might not look for in music. Yet despite her quirkiness, neither of these are words that encapsulate St. Vincent’s music. Her songwriting and guitar skills are just made a little more interesting with the slightly peculiar vibe that she sometimes gives off. It keeps things from getting too straightforward and gives Annie a unique style that sets her apart from the pack. Check out the video for “Cruel,” and stream her new album Strange Mercy via NPR.
