Here’s a grim reality in music industry news: there hasn’t been a platinum album released this year. Only Disney’s Frozen has managed to crack the platinum sales mark in 2014 and the soundtrack was released last year. Although no artist’s album has managed to sell a million copies, that’s likely to change next week, when sales figures for Taylor Swift’s new album, 1989, are revealed.
1989, which features “Shake It Off,” is expected to sell more than one million copies in its debut week, something that’s only happened 18 other times since Nielsen began tracking sales figures in 1991. It wouldn’t be the first time Swift’s done this, having sold 1.05 million copies of 2010’s Speak Now and 1.21 million copies of 2012’s Red in their respective opening weeks.
