Vince Staples is tired of labels, but not the type you might expect. Now that his massive debut album Summertime ’06 is earning accolades from audiences and critics the world over, Staples has often been branded a “conscious rapper” due to his dexterous wordplay and the cultural commentary in his verses. This is not okay with Vince.

The Long Beach rapper took to Twitter to vent his frustrations, telling his fans “I am highly offended by the term conscious rap don’t associate me with that.” He goes on to decry the need to distinguish between “real” and “fake” hip-hop, claiming that “I’d rather be based s/o Lil B.” Read the rest of his thoughts below.
