Now, as even more time has passed and people continue to dig through his catalog, the numbers are still climbing. Billboard reports that over 4 million albums and songs have been sold in the United States since he passed away on April 21. This includes 735,000 albums and 3.3 million songs.
For some perspective: 5,000 albums and 14,000 songs were sold the week before his death.
We’ve seen spikes following musicians’ deaths before, but these numbers are especially high due to the relative difficulty to find and stream his music online. At the moment, Tidal is the only streaming service to offer the bulk of his discography.
Fans looking for any little piece of their hero can also grab a slice of history in late June as the jacket Prince wore in his 1984 film Purple Rain is being auctioned off in Calabasas, California. The organization putting on the auction, Profiles in History, say the jacket is estimated at $6,000 to $8,000.
