The Webby Awards is an annual event that honors the best of the internet. As this year’s ceremony nears (May 17), the organization has named their winners, and one of those winners is none other than Kanye West.
Kanye will be recognized as Webby Artist of the Year, an award that has also been received by the likes of David Bowie, Prince, and Beastie Boys. The Artist of the Year category honors the “artists and entertainers who have harnessed the power of the Internet to reach new creative heights.”
From helping TIDAL become the most popular app on the iTunes App Store after premiering The Life of Pablo through it, to his current website (“an ever-changing curio-cabinet of products, ideas, videos, and recordings), the organization believes that he should be recognized for the “incredible digital heights he has reached.” This includes the milestone that The Life of Pablo helped Kanye reach, being the first album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard charts from over 50% streaming units.
The organization also cites his Twitter presence, “where [Kanye] is divisive and unafraid to speak his mind, share his woes and spread love to his fans, family and fellow artists,” as what has made him into an “unmissable voice online.”
The 2016 Webby Awards, hosted by Nick Offerman, will be livestreamed via YouTube on Tuesday, May 17.
