Beloved singer-songwriter George Michael has passed away at age 53, BBC reports.

According to a statement from his publicist, the legendary singer passed away "peacefully at home." Police on the scene reported that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Michael's death. "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period," the statement from his publicist reads. "The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."

The North London musician, whose impressive career spanned four decades, was reportedly working on new material with producer and songwriter Naughty Boy before his tragic passing. He launched his career in the 1980s as one half of the duo Wham!, and found greater success as a solo artist later on. Michael sold a massive 100 million records before his death. His debut solo album Faith spawned six top five singles and has sold upwards of 25 million copies since its 1987 release. The album was awarded the Grammy Award for Album of the Year shortly after its release.

Michael will be missed dearly by the music community.
