Ever since breaking big with "PRBLMS," and his subsequent FREE 6LACK tape, Atlanta's 6LACK has been careful to deliver nothing but the goods in the run-up to his next release. "Cutting Ties" and "That Far" were special in their own right, but when "Switch" dropped last month, it felt like a special moment.
Lyrically, the Ty Dolla Sign collab seems to confront the dark side of fame, and a relationship that slowly sours. But the video tells a more complicated story. It opens with 6LACK flat on his back, the detritus of a crashed Yamaha strewn around his body. From there, we go backwards—a collage of home videos starts to unfurl, starting with the moment 6LACK decided to shave his signature dreads. Between the staticky flickers of TV screens, we see him shut down stages, spend time with Ty Dolla, and help his baby take some early steps. It's a compelling mix of personal footage and stylized performance video, on par with his early, moody offerings for "PRBLMS" and "Free."
