From his Twitter musings and bold sartorial choices, Jaden Smith has consistently shown the world he’s not afraid to be different. So when it came time to release his highly anticipated sophomore album, the multi-hyphenate chose to premiere the project on an unexpected platform.

Smith officially announced Syre: The Electric Album last month, shortly before he dropped its lead single “GHOST” featuring Christian Rich. This week, the 20-year-old revealed two interesting facts about the effort: 1) It was “not a rap album” as many people expected, and 2) It would debut on his official Instagram page.

Smith recently told The Fader that JAY-Z was a big source of inspiration for The Electric Album.

“I decided to talk to Hov and he told me he thought the album was cool and he said as I got older I would space out my verses more and I'd say more with less,” he said. “That's the total inspiration behind my next album.”
